In Statue of Liberty with Freedom Tower, Bisbee unites two of New York’s most recognisable landmarks in one frame. The scene, painted in oil on canvas, balances the historical gravitas of Lady Liberty with the sleek, contemporary silhouette of the Freedom Tower. Cool blues in the sky meet the soft greens of the statue and the silvery reflections of glass, creating a palette that bridges centuries.
The artist’s expressive mark-making captures the way these structures rise against the city’s ever-changing skyline. There’s a vertical energy to the composition, guiding the eye upward in a gesture that mirrors Liberty’s own. Through colour harmony and controlled contrast, Bisbee creates a meeting point between history and modernity, tradition and progress.
Artist statement: When I draw figures, I try to get my body into the same position as the figure that I am going to paint. I feel where the muscles stretch and pull. Reaching for the sky with the flame, the feeling helps me define the proportion. Lady liberty may just be a statue, but the idea behind who she is… I just can’t imagine what my grandmothers would’ve felt when they first saw the Statue of Liberty as they came into the harbor as immigrants.
