Benedict Flanagan

Benedict is a painter, artist and educator. His paintings are studies of colour and light inspired by the everyday life he finds around him. He studied Illustration at Falmouth University and UAL. Having worked as an illustrator, Benedict went on to study classical drawing and painting techniques, including plein-air painting, at London Fine Art Studios. The artist continues to teach, learn, and be inspired by recreating the subtle effects of light, atmosphere, and colour on the subject.
“Plein-air painting is at the core of my practice. Spending time painting on location provides a sense of place, through its immediacy and authenticity of colour. It allows me to meet the people who live there and understand its quirks and history. Lighting, figures, and clouds can change dramatically throughout the process, allowing me to pick and choose elements that suit my subject best. These paintings are studies of colour and light inspired by everyday life. Back in the studio I distil these observations into a single idea in a larger painting. It could be anything, a rhythm, colour, shape, or most often, it’s the light. All artistic and design decisions are structured towards this, building towards a simpler and more refined piece that shares the wonder and beauty I saw in the landscape.”
