Biography

Daniel Castan, Contemporary artist

Daniel Castan, born in 1959 in Dordogne, demonstrated a passion for drawing from a very young age. After graduating from the School of Fine Arts of Bordeaux, he embarked on a journey that would eventually lead him back to painting later in life, purely for the joy it brought him. At the age of 48, he made the bold decision to pursue his artistic dreams wholeheartedly.

Early in his professional career, Daniel Castan found himself drawn to the vibrant urban landscapes of cities like New York and Hong Kong. He developed a special fascination for their exaggerated perspectives and dynamic environments. In his paintings, he seeks to recreate these graphic cityscapes, where the lines of buildings stretch into the sky, avenues seem to extend endlessly, and colours collide in a mesmerizing dance.

Drawing from his memories and imagination, Daniel Castan infuses his artwork with a unique perspective on urban life. He chooses to work primarily with alkyd oil, a medium that offers the richness of traditional oil paints but with accelerated drying times due to its resin-based binder. His preferred tool is the palette knife, allowing him to manipulate the paint with a textured, sculptural quality and to experiment with various materials.
