Biography
Elizabeth Ritcert is an award-winning contemporary realist artist based in the United States whose work is inspired by the quiet poetry of the natural world. Originally trained as a sculptor, she began her artistic career working in ceramics before expanding into drawing and painting. Over time, she explored pastels and eventually transitioned to oil painting, which has become her primary medium.
Elizabeth’s background in sculpture continues to influence her artistic approach. Even as a painter, she observes nature with a sculptor’s eye—carefully studying the interplay of shape, form, light, and shadow. This sensitivity to structure and atmosphere is reflected in her compositions, which often feature detailed impressions of birds, flora, and other elements from the natural environment. Her work seeks to capture both the physical presence and the subtle emotional resonance of her subjects.
Throughout her career, Elizabeth has been recognised for her distinctive vision and technical skill. Her paintings are held in private and corporate collections, and her practice has been supported by museums, galleries, and prestigious artist residencies across the United States.
Her honours include Runner-up in the Southwest Art Magazine Artistic Excellence Competition, as well as selection for several notable artist residencies, including Mill Atelier in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Hambidge Center in Rabun Gap, Georgia, the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont, Wyoming, and the Villa Montalvo Center for the Arts in Saratoga, California. She is also a recipient of the Massachusetts Arts Lottery Grant (Somerville, MA) and received a City of Cambridge, Massachusetts “One Percent for Art” purchase award.
Elizabeth continues to develop her practice from her studio in the United States, creating contemplative works that celebrate the beauty, fragility, and intricate details of the natural world.

“My goal is to transport the viewer into the world I create on canvas. Through the beauty of realism and the illusionary effects of Trompe L'oeil, I strive to make each piece feel alive and full of delightful emotion. There’s something magical about transforming nature into art, and I’m honored and grateful to have found the hidden skill I have, and the opportunity to share the results with viewers and collectors alike. There is something profoundly compelling about how we project our own emotions and narratives onto creatures that experience the world in ways we can never fully understand.
