Hamish Herd

Born in South Africa and now based in the United Kingdom, Hamish Herd has been passionate about art since his earliest memories. Actively engaged in the creative process from a young age, Hamish pursued his love for art academically, majoring in Art History. After completing his studies, he began his career teaching art at the secondary school level. However, it wasn’t long before Hamish transitioned to a full-time professional artist, a path he has passionately followed for the past 25 years. Hamish is skilled in both sculpture and painting, drawing inspiration from his faith to infuse his work with profound meaning. His paintings, predominantly executed in oil, follow a meticulous multi-layered approach. This process, often described as ‘sittings,’ involves creating an underlayer to block out colors, followed by the introduction of contrasting tones using an oil medium called liquin. Each layer, applied over 4-6 sittings, is carefully crafted and allowed to dry overnight, ensuring depth and texture in the final piece. Hamish’s technique involves using a palette knife for markings and textures, blended with a buffing brush to achieve the desired finish. He builds up white areas with multiple layers to intensify their brightness, creating a tension between light and dark that symbolizes the divine glory he seeks to represent in his work.
“For me, the light in my paintings is a representation of God’s glory. Each painting is a testament to the balance between darkness and light, chaos and serenity, capturing the divine beauty of the natural world.” – Hamish Herd
