Born in Northumberland, Ian Robinson worked in the Oil & Gas Industry until moving to London in 2007 to study painting at Wimbledon College of Art. During a residency at Notting Hill’s Muse Gallery, the artist achieved his first solo show in 2011. He is currently based in southeast London.
Creating oil paintings inspired by people’s passions and their collections such as lovingly rendered and curated records, magazines, books and iconic objects. The artist’s milieu evokes nostalgia and are visually reminiscent of pop art. Ian’s imagery revels in the collected material found in museum collections, libraries, second hand shops, auctions, private collections and UK pop culture. Approaching the conflicts of the past and present, Ian’s paintings raise a dialogue that emphasises the way analogue subjects face replacement from newer, digital technology. Capturing a senses of wonder, his pieces have a retro aesthetic, focusing on analogue artefacts of the past. This shows an understanding of the unique stories and emotions that are tied to physical objects. His process involves extracting found objects from second-hand stores and car boot sales, incorporating everything from musical collectables to books.
