Jill, born in the USA in 1946, brought her family to the UK during the 1950s. After completing her studies at Colchester School of Art and the Central School of Art & Design, Jill pursued a career in publishing before transitioning to a freelance role. Notably, she collaborated closely with her husband, Martin Leman, contributing to the design, research, and writing of numerous books showcasing his paintings. From 1996 onward, Jill turned her focus to painting, embracing this artistic endeavor wholeheartedly. Her work has been showcased extensively in various mixed exhibitions throughout London and the UK, including prestigious events such as the RA Summer Exhibition and the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition. Jill’s artistic accomplishments also include hosting four solo exhibitions in prominent venues located in London and Ipswich. Jill’s artistic process is rooted in her fascination with color, which often stems from sources as diverse as flowers, textiles, decorative ceramics, or everyday objects found in domestic settings. She places a strong emphasis on drawing as a foundation for understanding and connecting with her subject matter. Her approach involves establishing a solid underlying structure in her work, which then serves as a launchpad for the painting’s independent expression. Jill’s artistic creations have a distinct domestic quality, and she creates her paintings with the intention of bringing joy to people’s homes. Her art is meant to be hung on walls and enjoyed by those who encounter it. This focus on providing aesthetic pleasure and enriching the domestic space is central to Jill’s creative philosophy.
