Hampstead Viaduct

This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online.
In Hampstead Viaduct, Nick Quirke captures a moment of radiant serenity, where natural and manmade forms meet under a sky ablaze with vibrant color. The stone viaduct spans a calm river, its arches mirrored perfectly in the water’s surface. The sky above bursts with expressive hues-turquoise, magenta, and violet-that ripple into the reflection below, creating a visual dialogue between heaven and earth. Trees in early bloom line the banks, their foliage rendered in rich greens that contrast with the cool tones …

Quirke’s brushwork is both fluid and deliberate. The color transitions are smooth yet bold, invoking the shifting light of either dawn or dusk. Despite the exaggerated palette, the sense of place remains rooted and believable, a testament to the artist’s understanding of atmosphere. The viaduct, though architecturally simple, serves as a grounding structure, drawing the eye horizontally across the canvas and balancing the more expressive movements above and below.

Hampstead Viaduct invites the viewer to step into a dreamscape of color and calm. The tranquil reflection, saturated hues, and elegant geometry combine to evoke a moment suspended between real and imagined. This painting speaks to Quirke’s ability to harmonize composition, color, and emotion in a way that transcends realism and enters the poetic.
