In Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan, Bisbee captures the sweep and drama of crossing into the city. Painted in oil on canvas, the view stretches toward the skyline, the Statue of Liberty poised in the distance. The palette is a harmonious blend of deep magentas, violets, and cool greys, enriched by the artist’s signature use of oil glaze for luminous depth.
The bridge’s iconic cables are rendered with meticulous precision against a backdrop of looser, more atmospheric architectural forms. This juxtaposition adds both structure and movement to the scene, conveying the feeling of transition from one borough to the next. The viewer can almost sense the hum of the city growing closer with each brushstroke.
Artist statement: Snapped the reference photo for this painting of the Brooklyn Bridge from the subway train which travels over the East River over the Manhattan Bridge. The texture is pronounced in this oil painting. When I add hues of oil glaze, the grooves of the texture grab hold of the pigment generating a variety of colors. When I use a long thin scriptliner brush to render the cables on the Brooklyn Bridge, I hold my breath to keep a steady hand.
