Painted in oil on canvas, Lisa Bisbee captures one of Boston’s most iconic views, combining the timelessness of Fenway Park with the glowing presence of the CITGO sign. The piece balances a playful abstraction of form with recognizable landmarks, creating an impression of both memory and immediacy. The thick textures and energetic brushwork are signatures of her abstracted cityscape style, lending vibrancy and movement to the city scene.
Artist Statement:
I knew of the Red Sox when I was little because we would trade baseball cards with the neighborhood kids. Turns out the CITGO sign is just as much of a landmark in Boston as the Fenway Park baseball stadium, home of the Big Green Monster. I was a graphic designer throughout my life, so designing logos were a big thing for me. Arthur King designed the CITGO sign 50 years ago. I can’t imagine how he must feel for his design to turn into an icon.
The colour palette glows with contrasts: vivid reds and oranges dominate the central sign, while purples, greens, and yellows balance the urban landscape. These tones are not literal but heightened, transforming Boston into a dreamlike theatre of colour. The effect is one of both nostalgia and celebration—a painting that hums with energy and history alike.
