Empire State Building View from 18th Street is a vivid cityscape that blends traditional architectural painting with a contemporary twist. Painted in oil on canvas, the work captures the intersection’s bustling geometry, leading the eye upward to the Empire State’s familiar form. The palette brims with reds, purples, and blues, enriched with Bisbee’s layered brushwork for added texture and depth.

The slightly distorted proportions give the scene a panoramic, almost collage-like quality. This effect, combined with the saturated colours, creates a vibrant sense of place — part documentation, part artistic reimagining. The result is a painting that feels alive with the visual rhythm of New York.

Artist statement: We were heading to the Affordable Art Fair last Autumn, and I stopped to capture reference photos. You’d have to have some patience if we were to travel together. I don’t just snap one photo, I snap many, so you’d be waiting twirling your thumbs for a while. I try to get every angle so that I can piece them together in a “David Hockney” sort of way to capture the whole scene. I learned the technique at SCAD in a photographic course. The end result has a panoramic view of the location with distorted proportions.
