Freedom Tower Sunset from Whitney Museum captures Manhattan’s skyline bathed in a glowing, fiery sky. Painted in oil on canvas, the work juxtaposes the luminous, glazed surface of the evening sky with the opaque solidity of the city’s architecture. This contrast between reflection and absorption creates a dynamic interplay of light and form.

The saturated reds, oranges, and purples heighten the drama of the moment, transforming an observed sunset into a painterly study of colour theory and atmosphere. Through confident composition and masterful texture, the artist presents the Freedom Tower as both a physical landmark and an emblem of the city’s energy.

Artist statement: Light is either absorbed or reflected. The sky here has a translucent glaze so it reflects, like luminosity, meanwhile the buildings are opaque so light is absorbed. I love seeing the contrast of the two, it’s a science thingy. When I was a kid, I thought being a scientist would be cool. As it turns out, being an artist is similar to being a scientist, because now I experiment with all kinds of colors, shapes, perspective and proportions. Those elements of design were the foundations that I learned at Savannah College of Art & Design.
