Manhattan Bridge Arch and Colonnade captures the grandeur of the Beaux-Arts entrance to the Manhattan Bridge, rendered in a bold spectrum of pinks, purples, and golds. Painted in oil on canvas, the work showcases the sweeping curve of the colonnade and the elegant archway, drawing the viewer into the historic gateway towards Little Italy.
The artist’s layered, tactile brushwork and saturated colours amplify the monumentality of the structure. By embracing slight distortions in proportion, the scene transcends mere architectural study, becoming an expressive portrait of place — alive with movement, light, and atmosphere.
Artist statement: What an entrance! On the way to Little Italy, we pass through an Italian-style archway marking the entrance to Little Italy at the Manhattan Bridge. I hesitated for years to paint the structure of the colonnade because it was intimidating, thinking how could I showcase the curved architecture in the classical Beaux-Arts style with the honor that it so deserves. Well, after all those years, I summoned the courage, here is my attempt and I definitely like how it turned out with all these saturated colors.
