In “Side by Side”, Richard Gower distills human connection into a minimalist yet emotionally rich scene. Painted in oil on board, the piece captures a fleeting urban moment: several figures—some solitary, others in quiet conversation—are depicted walking across a reflective surface, possibly a rain-slick pavement or sunlit plaza. The soft, abstracted background of cool whites and blues gently frames the silhouettes, creating an ethereal, almost dreamlike atmosphere.
Gower’s signature impasto technique is on full display, with tactile brushstrokes lending texture and vitality to both figures and reflections. Though the composition is pared back and spacious, it hums with presence. Each figure appears both anchored and transient, inviting the viewer to consider themes of companionship, solitude, and movement through shared spaces.
Elegant and understated, “Side by Side” is a testament to the power of subtlety in contemporary art. It offers both calm and introspection—ideal for collectors who appreciate nuanced storytelling and refined execution. In a quiet corner or central space, this painting radiates serenity while sparking contemplation.
