Lisa Bisbee’s Statue of Liberty II captures the monument as more than stone and copper — it’s a living emblem of hope. Painted in oil on canvas, the work merges a figurative cityscape sensibility with the warmth of personal connection. The palette pairs muted copper-greens with soft sky tones, evoking both the physical beauty of the statue and the ideals she represents.

Bisbee’s brushwork has a tactile confidence, layering colour in ways that give the statue depth and luminosity. The surrounding forms dissolve into suggestion, placing full emphasis on Liberty’s steady presence and raised torch. It’s a scene anchored in realism yet infused with a painter’s emotional vocabulary, turning a familiar symbol into an intimate portrait of welcome and resilience.

Artist statement: Lady liberty may just be a statue, but the idea behind who she is… The most beautiful woman, with the hope and the dreams, the Statue of Liberty raised her torch for me as a reminder of my grandparents who set sail across the Atlantic from the United Kingdom. What excitement they must have felt seeing the grand lady welcoming them to the land of freedom. My dear friend A.J. (Andrea) Clements wrote a book about her family’s emigration from Ireland to USA, it’s a love story. And when I think of all the hope that immigrants had in their hearts, I mist up. The copper sculpture, not just a symbol, a memory. Hiking the 354 steps as a kid to reach the top, the stairs were a strenuous adventure.
