In oil on canvas, Bisbee brings Tan Teng Niah House to life with a kaleidoscope of saturated hues. The historic villa, located in Singapore’s Little India, becomes a living jewel—every wall, window, and awning glowing with expressive colour.
Artist statement: I had a strong desire to paint the Tan Teng Niah House in Singapore. It’s so colorful in real life. Usually my palette doesn’t even have this many variations of hues, so I took it on as a challenge. Little India is a vibrant cultural district with brightly painted shophouses. Currently this building is the last surviving Chinese villas in Little India, now a little bit of history to live on forever in my colorful painting.
The brushwork is lively and textured, reinforcing the exuberance of the palette. Bisbee doesn’t just document the building—she elevates it into a symbol of heritage and joy, ensuring its cultural story continues in vibrant, painted form.
