Venus over Albert Bridge captures one of London’s most recognisable landmarks at the magical moment between dusk and night, when the illuminated bridge begins to glow against the deepening sky. Painted in oil on canvas, Alex Rennie brings together impressionistic brushwork and contemporary cityscape painting to create a scene that feels both atmospheric and timeless. Framed by dark silhouettes of trees, the composition draws the viewer naturally towards the bridge, whose elegant reflections shimmer across the calm waters of the Thames.
The colour palette is built around rich midnight blues, soft violets, and warm golden lights that dance across the river’s surface. Rennie balances areas of deep shadow with luminous highlights, allowing the illuminated structure to become the focal point of the painting. The loose yet carefully controlled brushwork captures the changing quality of evening light while preserving the recognisable character of Albert Bridge, creating a sense of quiet romance that is synonymous with London after sunset.
Working within an impressionistic cityscape tradition, Rennie conveys not only the appearance of the location but also its atmosphere and emotional resonance. The painting celebrates the beauty of one of London’s most beloved bridges, inviting viewers to linger in its peaceful evening glow.
