Washington Square Arch with Freedom Tower reimagines an iconic New York landmark through bold colour and inventive composition. Painted in oil on canvas, the work positions the famous archway in the crisp clarity of winter, its stone surface glowing in pink and violet hues. The bare branches allow a rare glimpse of the One World Observatory crowning the Freedom Tower, subtly visible in the distance.
By adjusting the scale of the Freedom Tower, the artist creates a heightened sense of focus, blending observation with imaginative distortion. The saturated tones and confident brushwork imbue the scene with both immediacy and timelessness, making a familiar location feel entirely new.
Artist statement: Chilly and leafless. It was the middle of Winter when I captured the reference photo for this painting. Without the leaves on the trees at Washington Square Park, the One World Observatory onto of the Freedom Tower comes into view. It’s quite small in the distance, so I distorted its proportion to call attention to its appearance.
