Currently available for acquisition at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online, Bears + Eggs is an unexpected delight—a surreal pairing of gummy bears and fried egg sweets, alternating in neat formation across a square canvas. It’s a study in contrast and cohesion, where opposing forms and textures come together in joyful conversation. The supple golden sheen of the bears is offset by the velvety white and orange softness of the eggs, their cartoon realism lovingly sculpted in paint.
Bertolucci plays with material illusion here, luring the viewer into a tactile reverie. The yolks seem to float above the surface, while the gummy bears glisten like edible glass. Subtle cast shadows provide a rhythmic, almost musical undercurrent—uniting the disparate elements in a cohesive visual cadence.
What might at first glance appear playful becomes something more: an invitation to reconsider the banal with wonder. With precision and wit, Bears + Eggs bridges humour and high art, conjuring the joy of the sweetshop with the grace of a still life master.
