“Budgies” by Lucinda Holland is a delightful celebration of colour, character, and the lively presence of birds within an intimate domestic setting. Painted in oil on wood and measuring 21 x 21 cm, the composition presents two budgies among a collection of vintage books and objects on a wooden shelf. A green and yellow bird stands confidently at the lower edge, while a blue and white budgie perches above on a small vessel, creating a charming arrangement that brings wildlife and still life together.

Holland’s realist approach gives the birds an almost tangible presence. Their feathers are rendered with careful attention to pattern, colour, and softness, from the fine markings around the blue budgie’s head to the vivid transitions of yellow and green across its companion. The surrounding books and vessel are treated with similar precision, allowing the birds to feel naturally integrated within the richly observed setting.

The arrangement of the books establishes a strong vertical rhythm throughout the composition. Their varied heights and gently irregular positions lead the eye across the shelf, while the two budgies interrupt this sequence with rounded, organic forms. The lower bird provides a visual anchor near the base of the scene, while the elevated blue budgie draws attention upwards, creating an engaging dialogue between the two figures.

Colour is central to the painting’s visual impact. Holland surrounds the birds with an earthy palette of warm browns, ochres, muted reds, and softened greens, allowing their brighter plumage to stand out clearly. The electric blue of the upper budgie and the fresh green and yellow of the lower bird provide vivid accents against the deeper tones of the books, wood, and dark background, creating a carefully balanced contrast.

The painting’s realism also encourages a heightened awareness of surface and texture. Soft feathers contrast with the worn surfaces of old books, the grain of the wooden shelf, and the smooth, aged finish of the vessel. Holland’s detailed brushwork captures these differences with precision, while subtle highlights and shadows give the objects and birds convincing volume within the compact space.

Yet “Budgies” is more than a meticulous study of birds within a still-life setting. By placing these colourful animals among objects associated with reading, collecting, and domestic life, Holland creates a scene filled with personality and quiet humour. The birds seem to have claimed the bookshelf as their own environment, transforming an orderly arrangement into a playful encounter between nature and the human world.

With its accomplished realism, richly earthy palette, and striking accents of blue, green, and yellow, “Budgies” transforms a familiar domestic setting into an engaging contemporary wildlife painting. This original oil on wood work combines technical precision with charm, colour, and narrative character, bringing warmth and a lively sense of personality to any collection.
