Laura Critchlow’s “Fruit Bowl and Candle” is a poetic still life that marries classical elegance with miniature precision. A delicate flame rises from a slender white candle, casting a soft, golden glow across a perfectly balanced arrangement of fresh fruits—apples, limes, and mandarins—nestled within a blue-and-white porcelain bowl. The gleam of candlelight dances across the fruit skins, while a trio of dark grapes and a pair of ripe figs lend a rich counterpoint of texture and colour.

Critchlow’s signature lies in her reverent treatment of light and form. Set against a velvety black backdrop, the composition feels both timeless and intimate, echoing the quiet drama of 17th-century Dutch still life paintings. Every brushstroke enhances the illusion of volume and sheen, while the restrained colour palette draws focus to the delicate interplay between flame and fruit.
