Pancakes

In Pancakes, Heinz Schönhammer transforms a simple breakfast scene into a striking contemporary still life filled with movement and indulgent detail. Painted in oil on canvas, the composition features a tower of golden pancakes stacked delicately above a white plate, each layer connected by flowing ribbons of honey. The carefully balanced arrangement appears almost gravity-defying, creating a playful and visually engaging interpretation of a familiar subject.

Schönhammer’s work draws on the tradition of realism in still life painting, where everyday objects are rendered with meticulous attention to texture and light. The artist captures the soft surface of the pancakes, the glossy sheen of the syrup and the delicate reflections on the plate with impressive precision. The floating berries scattered throughout the composition introduce a surreal element that adds energy and narrative to the scene.

The colour palette is rich and inviting, dominated by warm golden tones of the pancakes and honey that glow against a deep, atmospheric background. Pops of vibrant red and dark blue berries provide contrast and rhythm across the composition, while subtle highlights enhance the sense of depth and realism. Executed in oil on canvas, this original artwork showcases Schönhammer’s ability to elevate a simple culinary subject into a refined contemporary still life.
