In Texas Wildflower, Michael Steinbrick presents a striking original still life in oil on linen, combining contemporary realism with a distinctive arrangement of objects that celebrates the character, colour and symbolism of the American Southwest. A delicate Texas wildflower emerges from a sculptural skull-shaped glass vase, positioned alongside a glass whiskey bottle, white lime and salt jar, while a vivid red butterfly appears to feed from the lime, introducing an unexpected moment of movement and life into the carefully composed still life.

The composition creates an intriguing dialogue between nature, mortality and indulgence. The skull-shaped vase immediately introduces a sense of symbolism, while the fragile wildflower growing from within it suggests renewal, resilience and the continuation of life. The whiskey bottle and accompanying lime and salt evoke the atmosphere of a traditional Western setting, giving the work a distinctly Texan character. The butterfly adds a further layer of symbolism, representing transformation and the fleeting nature of existence.

Steinbrick’s carefully observed realism brings each object to life, from the reflective surface of the glass bottle and sculptural vase to the delicate petals of the wildflower and the translucent wings of the butterfly. The contrasting textures create visual richness, while the carefully balanced arrangement gives the painting a quiet sense of drama.

The natural tones of the wildflower, the crisp whites of the lime and salt jar, and the rich glass tones of the whiskey bottle are punctuated by the striking red of the butterfly. This restrained yet expressive palette allows each element to retain its individual presence while contributing to a unified composition. Steinbrick’s controlled oil technique captures subtle reflections, surfaces and textures with the precision characteristic of contemporary realism.

Straddling the space between traditional still life and contemporary symbolism, Texas Wildflower invites contemplation on the relationship between life and mortality, nature and human culture. The unexpected combination of a wildflower, skull-shaped vessel, whiskey bottle and butterfly transforms familiar objects into a poetic meditation on resilience, transformation and the passage of time.

This one-of-a-kind original work combines meticulous realism, distinctive Texan imagery and rich symbolic detail to create a sophisticated and memorable still life. Signed by the artist and ready to display, Texas Wildflower measures 40 × 40 cm and is currently available for purchase at Signet Contemporary Art in Chelsea and online.
