This delightful trio of chimpanzee portraits by Sophia Chalklen brings together humour, personality and remarkable technical precision in a set that celebrates the expressive nature of our closest animal relatives. Painted in oil on canvas, each composition captures a different moment of character — from playful curiosity to contemplative gesture and mischievous expression. Displayed together, the works form a narrative sequence that highlights the emotional intelligence and individuality of chimpanzees, inviting viewers to engage with them almost as if they were human portraits.
Working within the tradition of contemporary wildlife realism, Chalklen demonstrates exceptional observational skill and control of detail. The delicate rendering of fur, skin textures and facial expressions reveals the artist’s dedication to capturing the subtleties of primate anatomy while preserving the personality of each subject. The close-up compositions draw attention to the eyes and hands, elements that communicate expression and emotion, giving the paintings a strong sense of life and presence.
The colour palette is luminous and harmonious across the series, with soft gradients of turquoise, blue and green creating an atmospheric background that enhances the warmth of the chimpanzees’ rich browns, deep blacks and subtle pink tones in their skin. This contrast allows the figures to stand out clearly while maintaining a calm and balanced composition. Executed in oil on canvas, this original set beautifully demonstrates Chalklen’s ability to combine technical realism with charm and storytelling. This original work is available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art and online.
